LIGHTHOUSES OF BRITISH COLUMBIA:

GPS and Mapping data

The location data provided on this page is accurate to within 100 meters or so. It was compiled from the Pacific Coast - List of Lights, Buoys, and Fog Signals and from topographic maps.

Waypoint files are provided below in a variety of formats. If you need a different file format for your GPS or mapping software, you should be able to convert these files to a useable format with software such as GPSBabel, GPS Utility, GPS Track, G7toWin, or online at the Wayhoo.com website.

Lighthouse Waypoints in GPX Format

These files contain the BC lighthouse waypoint information in GPX format.  Several of the newer GPS applications use this format for exchanging GPS data.

You can open these files with the free EasyGPS software and use it to send data to your GPS unit.  Even without a GPS, you can use Easy GPS to view online road maps with the lighthouse locations marked, and also access online topographic maps of the area.

Note: In order to download these files, you may need to right-click on the file links and choose "Save target as..." or "Save link as ..." from the pop-up menu.

Lighthouse "pushpins" for Microsoft Streets & Trips

Follow these instructions to import the BC lighthouse pushpins into Microsoft Streets & Trips 2002 (or newer version):

  1. Download the bc-lights.csv and bc-autolights.csv files and save them where you can find them on your computer. (The My Documents folder would be a good place.)
Note: In order to download these files, you may need to right-click on the file links and choose "Save target as..." or "Save link as ..." from the pop-up menu.
  2. Start your Streets & Trips software.
  3. On the menu bar select Data > Import Data Wizard.
  4. Select the file you wish to import (bc-lights.csv or bc-autolights.csv). Click Open.
  5. Select Comma as the character that separates your fields. Then click Next
  6. Select Canada as the Country/Region and make sure the box beside "First row contains column headings" is checked. Then click Finish. Repeat steps 3 to 6 for each file you wish to import.
  7. The BC lighthouses will appear on the map as white "pushpins". Follow these steps to change the appearance of the lighthouses on the map:
    • If the Legend and Overview panel is not showing on the left side of the window, select View > Legend and Overview on the menu bar.
    • Double-click on the name of the file listed under Pushpins under the small overview map.
    • Choose a different symbol from the drop-down list of symbols. Then Click OK. (In the picture above the staffed lighthouses use small yellow circles and the automated lights use small white circles.)
  8. If you double-click on the lighthouse pushpins on the map, the name of the lighthouse will appear in a "balloon".  Click the small x to close the balloon.

Sharing your GPS

With Franson GpsGate you can share your GPS with two or more mapping applications on one computer or across a network.  Also, the virtual COM ports that it creates allow you to use a Garmin USB connection with software (like Streets & Trips) that normally requires the GPS to be on a serial port.
